You may already have heard of the Big Lunch initiative, which is a national one. There are even franking marks on letters, with the Big Lunch on them.
The idea is, across the UK, for people to arrange street picnics or street lunches, on the same day - Sunday 19th July. Epsom & Ewell Food Growing Group felt that organising street level lunches was a bit too much, but decided to organise one lunch for Epsom - in Alexandra Park.
The idea is that people bring the family, bring a picnic, including as much food that is either home grown, or at least as local as possible (not all that easy in Surrey!) and everyone gets the chance to share and swap food, and generally have a nice communal picnic, as well as meeting neighbours and other local residents, and generally having a good natter and a bit of fun.
The aim of the Big Lunch project is both celebrating local foods, and celebrating local community. A lot of people are growing at least a few things on patios, or in gardens and allotments - and plenty of vegetables and fruits should be ready by mid July. As for local foods, there are a few growers and producers in Surrey - the one that comes to mind first being Norbury Blue cheese, from south of Leatherhead.
