The UK currently imports 70% of its food - largely dependent on continuing supplies of cheap oil into the future, but local food growing seems to be all the rage nowadays, with everyone waking up to the fact that there are huge benefits from producing our own food. We can both save ourselves money by increasing the amount we grow here, as well as increase our "food security". And that ignores the fun, the sense of achievement, the healthy exercise and fresh air, and the huge carbon savings as well ...........
The Epsom and Ewell Food Growing group are working to promote local food growing, and felt that having some growing seedlings make the task of growing vegetables that bit easier, rather than starting from scratch with seeds and potting compost. They have about 230 pots growing now, which should be doing well by mid-May.
The group particularly want to get people who have never tried growing any food plants interested, as well as encouraging people who already do a bit of gardening to have a go at doing a bit more.
The sale is on Thursday 14th May, in the High Street (where the market is), from 9 am to 3pm.
