This time of year is especially challenging for us with so many people taking summer holidays and enjoying the best of the British summer. There are even franking marks on letters, with the Big Lunch on them.

The idea is, across the UK, for people to arrange street picnics or street lunches, on the same day - Sunday 19th July. Epsom & Ewell Food Growing Group felt that organising street level lunches was a bit too much, but decided to organise one lunch for Epsom - in Alexandra Park.

The idea is that people bring the family, bring a picnic, including as much food that is either home grown, or at least as local as possible (not all that easy in Surrey!) and everyone gets the chance to share and swap food, and generally have a nice communal picnic, as well as meeting neighbours and other local residents, and generally having a good natter and a bit of fun.

The aim of the Big Lunch project is both celebrating local foods, and celebrating local community. A lot of people are growing at least a few things on patios, or in gardens and allotments - and plenty of vegetables and fruits should be ready by mid July. As for local foods, there are a few growers and producers in Surrey - the one that comes to mind first being Norbury Blue cheese, from south of Leatherhead.

For more details, contact Sarah Clayton on 01372 722341
or email sarah.clayton7@ntlworld.com

Surrey Police Authority Petition (06-05-2009 00:20:25)

Some of you may have heard that the Government plans to “cap” the amount of money which Surrey Police can raise this year through Council Tax.

Even though the Government’s own auditors praise Surrey Police for “providing excellent value for money to the taxpayer”, the Government says that the Surrey Police budget for this year is too high. Consequently the Government plans to “cap” the amount of money that Surrey Police have already raised via Council Tax this year by £1.6m, forcing Surrey Police to return this money to the taxpayer. To do this, the Police will have to produce new, slightly lower council tax bills and distribute them to every household in the county.

The reduction amounts to around £3.24 for the year (or about 6p per week) for a Band D property. To return this £1.6m via the new council tax bills will cost £1.2m in administrative and distribution costs, and the resulting reduction in Police budget will force Surrey Police to cut 50 front line officer and staff posts.

Surrey Police Authority believes that this makes no sense, and it will compromise the ability of Surrey Police to provide the excellent front-line policing in Surrey that local people say they want. For this reason, Surrey Police Authority, with the full support of the Chief Constable, has decided to challenge the Government's plans.

One of its weapons is an on-line petition which has so far received over 4,500 signatures. We can both save ourselves money by increasing the amount we grow here, as well as increase our "food security". And that ignores the fun, the sense of achievement, the healthy exercise and fresh air, and the huge carbon savings as well ...........

The Epsom and Ewell Food Growing group are working to promote local food growing, and felt that having some growing seedlings make the task of growing vegetables that bit easier, rather than starting from scratch with seeds and potting compost. They have about 230 pots growing now, which should be doing well by mid-May.

The group particularly want to get people who have never tried growing any food plants interested, as well as encouraging people who already do a bit of gardening to have a go at doing a bit more.

The sale is on Thursday 14th May, in the High Street (where the market is), from 9 am to 3pm.

Road Repairs - Progress and Reporting (04-21-2009 16:01:53)

Following the snow and frost earlier this year, many of the local roads were left in poor condition.
